September 21, 1966 – Construction of the Mendocino Post Office, located on the corner of Ford and Ukiah Streets, began. Before his death earlier that summer, Auggie Heeser sold the land east of the Beacon office to be used for the site of the new post office. Don Pollard was in charge of the construction, with Don Bruce and Ray Merritt working on the 36 by 58 foot building.
In keeping with the area, the new building was envisioned as a wood frame structure with an exterior of redwood board and batten, a service lobby of redwood paneling, and a wood shingle roof. The building was 2,000 square feet, much larger than the 875 square feet of the previous post office located on Main Street.
The building was finished ahead of schedule, and the gigantic process of moving was completed on December 7, 1966.
