Seed Magic: Cherie Christiansen to Speak at the Kelley House

One of the experiences which should be common to all childhoods is the wonder of witnessing the sprouting of a seed.  Many of us recall the anticipation and fun of placing a dried bean between the glass wall of a jar and a damp paper towel, or similar material, and placing that jar in a space where light and air could reach it.  In a few [...]

Who Doesn’t Love a Picnic?

By Sarah Nathe If you went down in the woods some days starting in the 1880s, you would not find teddy bears having a picnic.  The picnickers were much more likely to be members of the well-off families from the communities along the coast.  People who didn’t actually have to work in the woods thought it was great fun to go out and eat in them. [...]

When the 1920s Roared in Mendocino

Recently, while researching something else, we came across a catalog record with a photograph of Elmer Strauss’ goggles, reportedly from his racing days at the Mendocino Race Track, built on what had been Heeser’s Ranch.  Mr. Elmer Strauss was no stranger to vehicles of many types.  Early in his career, he and George Daniels, both “town boys” were reported as having made the choice to work [...]

Marcia Lotter to Speak on Music Festival History

by Katy Tahja The local community has had thirty years to amass their favorite Mendocino Music Festival memories. That memory could be of a musician, an orchestral performance, a child watching opera for the first time, or an impromptu gathering of chamber musicians on a lawn in town, just making music. The Kelley House Museum will host “Tales of the Festival - A Sunday Afternoon With…Marcia [...]

See [...]

Lorraine Hee-Chorley to Speak at the Kelley House

“Chinese Contributions to Mendocino: A Promise Kept” is the title of our next “Sunday Afternoon With . . . Lorraine Hee-Chorley” to be held at the Kelley House Museum on Sunday, June 26th at 4:00 p.m.  As many locals know, Lorraine Hee-Chorley dedicated much of her time and talents to the preservation of her family’s roots, and those of other Chinese pioneers who settled here in [...]
