This photo was taken between 1919 and 1925 at the intersection of Lansing and Ukiah Streets, looking north. On the left side of the street is the Masonic Hall, built between 1866 and 1872, then a small store, followed by another small commercial building attached to a 2-story structure where carpenter/undertaker J. D. Johnson stored his burial caskets.

Historic Street with buildings on both sidesBeyond that is a garage, which would be purchased by Mendosa Brothers in 1933 for use as a warehouse. Next is Seman’s Blacksmith shop, located on the northwest corner of Lansing and Little Lake Streets, which was demolished in 1964. At the top of the hill is the first St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. Built in 1905, this church would burn down in 1930, and a new church was constructed on the site in 1931.

On the lower right of the photo is the Johnson-Stauer Building with Barry’s Card Room at the corner, operated by Chester Barry from 1919 until 1925. This building was constructed by J. D. Johnson in 1902, and merchant Henry Stauer purchased the property from Johnson’s estate in 1931.

Next is the general merchandise store owned by Stauer (today’s Goodlife Cafe & Bakery), then the old bakery building (where Rainsong Shoes is now located), and then Mendosa’s general store.

The last building is a large structure built inside the southwest corner of Hillcrest Cemetery by August Rahlves in 1884. Rahlves, a carpenter and undertaker, used the first floor as a cabinet and undertaking shop, and the second floor as the Rahlves family residence. In 1888, the property was purchased by the Mendocino Catholic Church and used as the church rectory. Later, the dwelling was rented out to members of the community. It was torn down in 1935.
